Roosevelt's Rough Riders represented agents of progress and civilization for the world; they were the heroes that helped bring new possessions to the U.S. and they demonstrated true American manhood. An expanded notion of conquest and imperialism permeated Buffalo Bill's Wild West during the 1890s and into the 1900s. In the 1899 season, Cody introduced the heroic rough riders of the Spanish American War in his Wild West. "Col. Cody secured some of the most celebrated 'bronco busters' of the west, including some of the Rough Riders who were with President Roosevelt in Cuba." To the grand martial drama of American civilization demonstrated in the Congress of Rough Riders of the World, whose magnificent feats of horsemanship form the most electrifying and extraordinary exhibition, was added the remarkable men of Roosevelt's regiment. Due to this addition, the press indicated that the Congress held the public interest stronger than ever.
